Sullivan Clare Williams’s body of work is a study in performance and exhibitionism through interpersonal moments of vulnerability. Moments of privacy and closeness laid bare on a public stage where the act of being seen is a part of the dance between lovers. The intimacy of these bonds can be observed through the weighted gaze of the figures depicted in Williams’ portraits. The eyes piercing the veil of the picture plane create a connection between viewer and subject. Much of Williams’ work is inspired by Greek mythology and growing up in the circus. The dynamics between the worshipped and the devout as well as the performer and audience are driving principles in their body of work. Their acrylic paintings capture how the extravagance of a performance draws you in to experience a brief, profound closeness between strangers that is akin to that of a lover who is more of an idea than flesh and blood.
